Independence

Our journalism is independent of our owners, advertisers, sponsors and any political interest. No one outside the newsroom may approve or alter editorial content before publication.

Gifts and hospitality

Journalists do not accept gifts, payment, free travel or hospitality that could compromise, or appear to compromise, their independence. [Specify value limits and the approval process for review copies, press trips and events.]

Financial interests

Journalists do not write about companies or assets in which they or their immediate family hold a material financial interest, and do not trade on information gathered in reporting. [Specify disclosure requirements and holding periods for staff covering business and markets.]

Political activity

Journalists covering politics and policy do not take part in partisan political activity, such as campaigning or donating to candidates or parties.

Fairness

We give people and organisations that are the subject of significant criticism a fair opportunity to respond before publication, and report their response.

Privacy and harm

We respect privacy and intrude only when there is a clear public interest. We take particular care with children, victims of crime, people in grief and people in vulnerable situations.

Plagiarism

We attribute the work of others, including other news organisations. Plagiarism is a serious breach of these standards.

Reporting concerns

Readers and staff can raise concerns about our conduct at [ethics contact email]. [Describe the internal process for investigating complaints.]
